Artist Statement

My recent work is based on patterns that I have observed around my neighborhood in South Brooklyn, with a particular emphasis on mosaic entryway tiles. I am interested in relics and anachronisms that we interact with in our daily routines; the lingering fragments of past designs, craft processes and tastes. The concept of patterns becomes a way for me to think about the strata of the past, and the lineage of forms that tie personal and societal structures to present and future states. I unpick collected motifs and re-form these elements into mixed media artworks that play with perceptual disorientation and changes of alignment. As these pieces accumulate, my intention is to play with slippery shifts between familiarity and novelty that we experience in our daily navigations; seeing the same thing over again, but altered under changing circumstances. Through repeating selected patterns at different scales, color palettes, alignments, and mediums, I try to create a sense of repeated forms that vibrate, never quite settling down.
